Weekly vs. biweekly mowing on Long Island.

Striped lawn after a weekly mow
Mow weekly from May through June, when cool-season grass grows fastest. Many Long Island lawns can switch to biweekly in July and August when growth slows. Keep the mower at 3 inches or higher, which is what Suffolk County's lawn guide recommends.

Typical Long Island mowing costs

Lawn sizeTypical market range per visit
Up to 1/8 acre$35 to $55
1/4 acre$45 to $85
1/2 acre$55 to $110
1 acre$100 to $175+

Why biweekly isn't always cheaper

Biweekly looks like half the price, but each cut takes longer when grass is taller, and many companies charge more per visit for it. In peak spring growth, two weeks of growth can mean cutting off much more than a third of the blade at once. That stresses the grass, leaves clumps, and can scalp thin spots.

The one-third rule

Never remove more than a third of the grass blade in one cut. If you mow at 3 inches, the grass shouldn't get much past 4.5 inches between visits. On Long Island in May and June, that usually means once a week.

A mowing calendar for Long Island

  • April: first cuts as growth starts.
  • May to June: weekly. Peak growth.
  • July to August: weekly or biweekly, depending on rain and irrigation.
  • September to October: growth picks up again, especially on overseeded lawns.
  • November: final cuts with the fall cleanup.

Mowing height and clippings

Suffolk County's lawn guide recommends mowing 3 inches or taller so roots grow deeper, and leaving clippings on the lawn to return nutrients to the soil and reduce fertilizer needs. Taller grass also shades out crabgrass and holds moisture in Long Island's sandy soil.

Sharp blades matter

A dull mower blade tears grass instead of cutting it, which leaves ragged, brown tips and makes the lawn more prone to disease. If the tips of your grass look shredded or white a day after mowing, the blade needs sharpening.

Change your mowing pattern

Mowing in the same direction every time can compact wheel tracks and make grass lean. Alternating direction from visit to visit keeps the cut even and the lawn standing upright.

Mowing in summer heat and drought

  • Keep the height up. Taller grass shades the soil and holds moisture.
  • Skip a cut if the lawn has stopped growing in a dry spell.
  • Avoid mowing in the hottest part of the day when the lawn is stressed.
  • Water about 1 inch per week including rain, which is Suffolk County's guideline.

What a full mowing visit usually includes

A professional mowing visit typically includes mowing, string trimming around beds and obstacles, edging along walks and driveways, and blowing clippings off hard surfaces. Bagging and haul-away is usually an add-on, since clippings left on the lawn are better for it.

FAQ

Common questions, answered.

Weekly in May and June, and weekly or every other week in July and August when growth slows.

Three inches or taller, as Suffolk County's lawn guidance recommends. Taller grass grows deeper roots and crowds out weeds.

Typical market pricing runs about $45 to $85 per visit for a quarter-acre lot, and more for larger properties. Ask for a quote based on your property.

Not in summer when growth is slow. In spring, two weeks of growth often means cutting off too much at once.

Leave them. Suffolk County notes clippings add nutrients back to the soil and reduce how much fertilizer the lawn needs.

Keep mowing as long as the grass is growing, usually into November. The last cut is often done with the fall cleanup.

It's best not to. Wet grass clumps, cuts unevenly and can tear, and mowers can rut soft soil.

If grass tips look shredded, white or brown a day or two after mowing, the blade is tearing instead of cutting and needs sharpening.
