Why the base matters on Long Island
Long Island gets real freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Water gets under a patio, freezes, expands, and lifts the pavers. A patio built on a couple inches of sand looks great for a season and then starts to wave. We excavate, lay and compact a gravel base in layers, set the pavers on a screeded bedding layer, install edge restraint, and sweep in polymeric sand so the joints lock and resist weeds and ants.
We also slope every patio slightly away from the house so rain runs off instead of pooling against your foundation.
How a patio project works
- Design on siteWe measure, talk shape, size and paver style, and mark the layout so you can see it.
- Itemized quoteSquare footage, base, materials and any extras (steps, fire pit, lighting) all listed.
- Excavate & baseDig out, haul away, then lay and compact the gravel base.
- Set & finishLay the pavers, cut the edges, install restraint, compact, and sand the joints.
- RestoreRepair the lawn and beds around the new patio so it looks finished.

What patios cost on Long Island
| Project | Typical Long Island range |
|---|---|
| Paver patio or walkway | $18-$35 / sq ft |
| Segmental block wall (2-3 ft) | $75-$145 / linear ft |
| Natural stacked stone wall | $130-$250+ / linear ft |
Typical Long Island market ranges, not a Green Horizon quote. Every property is priced individually. See the 2026 cost guide. Walls over about 3-4 feet usually need an engineer's design and a town permit.
Pavers or natural stone?
Pavers are uniform, come in hundreds of colors, and are easy to repair one piece at a time. Natural stone and flagstone have a one-of-a-kind look and suit older homes and garden paths. We install both and will show you samples.
