Mulch done right
More isn't better. Mulch piled up against tree trunks ("volcano mulching") traps moisture against the bark and invites rot and pests. We keep it 2-3 inches deep across the bed and pull it back a few inches from stems and trunks. That depth holds moisture in our sandy soil and blocks most weeds without smothering roots.
Most homeowners refresh mulch once a year in spring. A light top-up in fall keeps beds sharp through winter.
